There is no range test setting on a stock 9x radio. All you can do is turn on the tx and rx in a plane and start walking (or driving of course) and see how far you can go before the plane stops responding to your inputs. If you were to switch to the FrSky module/recievers, there is a range test option where you can cut the transmitter power to about 1/30 of normal.... that saves some walking!

i would like to do that but i do not want the diy module. i like to use the removable module instead of soldering it in. makes it more flexible. the thing is that i will be left with a big hole on the top of where the current antenna will be. and hobbyking is out of stock of the cap.

You might find a stopper of the correct size at your local car parts or auto electrical place.

RE: Blocking the hole where the aerial is.

What you need is a "Blanking Grommet" they are a dime a dozen in the automotive industry and come in many sizes. work out what size you need and se if it is avaliable ... if not ... get out your drill and make it work! :)
