Is it possible to fit a modern 2.4Gig transmitter (say the new Taranis) with an 36 mhz FM module (Australian)?

Yes no reason why old JR Form Factor RF Modules won't work but you will have to install a 35/36/37 Meg or whatever aerial and wire it to the correct pin on the module connector as this is left unconnected or earthed in the Turnigy.
The Taranis and the new 9xr haven't got a place for the 35/35/37 aerial but the Turnigy and variants do have the vestigial mountings used for the 35/36/37 aerials.
So the Taranis and the 9xr aren't good candidates and the Turnigy is your best bet.
Reverse compatibility only goes so far with the new stuff, try buying new 36 Meg gear, it doesn't exist!
