Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter trainer compatibility

Im looking for a second transmitter to create a trainer setup.
I have a Futaba EX6. And I know the chances are minimal but: is the Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter compatible as teacher or student with the Futaba EX6 ?
(even with alternative firmware)

I want to join a club to learn to fly (and land instead of crashing) but they all fly mode 1 or 3 and I'm stuck on mode 2. So I need to provide my own teacher /student system.

I'd strongly recommend getting a simulator too.

When I train new pilots, those who have spent time on a simulator generally only take about 10 minutes tuition to go solo. Those without time on the simulator take a *lot* longer!

The problem with Futaba is that the center-point of their channels is (or was) slightly different to that used by most other manufacturers and that can cause a few issues. You'd also need a suitable lead that had the Futaba connector on one end and the 9X lead on the other.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I forgot about the simulator, that is weird... I'll defenitely do that. (I've already got the cables)

But about the 9x as teacher/student : You're saying that it could work ?
Soldering my own cable is no issue but I would like to know for sure before I spend $60

Is there anyone that can verify if it does or does not work ?

As a reference a page with some custom cable pinouts: http://users.belgacom.net/TX2TX/tx2tx/e ... 2txgb7.htm

I have the 9x working with FMS using a stereo cable. None of your cable pinouts show a Futaba-to-stereo cable.

It is easy enough to turn a mode2 into mode1. Go to the turnigy thread in rcgroups, and others will be able to tell you how.

Mode 1 / Mode 2 conversion is no problem, also the simulator is no problem ( I have a USB cable for my futaba EX6).

My only problem is that I need to supply a teacher & student set and I'm hoping to find an economical solution. IF the Trurn.9X is compatible with my futaba 6EX that would certainly be good..

Maybe my cheapest option is to buy two of them. Could be cheaper than a second futaba

How do you configure the Turnigy 9X for tracher/student trainer setup?
I've got a couple of them, so is it as easy as connecting the two and go? Do you need to remove the Tx module from the student set?

I'm not too sure but it's something I'll be exploring very soon.

With the thus (th9x) or erezra (er9x) firmware, the ppm channel order can be changed so in that sense it should be easy to make the 9x compatible with a Futaba radio. Bruce alluded to some issues with centering which I can't really comment on except that it may be possible to trim out differences with the trim switches. The disadvantage with the er9x firmware for a new pilot is that the manual isn't up-to-date and the way that models are configured is quite different to a 'standard' radio in that there are no standard templates for plane, heli, glider etc. You have to construct the mixes yourself which may be a bit daunting. Having said that erezra has been very helpful and responsive to questions and one or two others on RCGroups have also got a bit of experience with setting it all up now. If you're willing to give it a go I'm sure you'd get there - especially for a basic trainer setup.

There have been several complaints about the trainer jack on the 9x not working with the Turnigy/FlySky module fitted and perhaps others. This is due to the unpowered module loading up the PPM signal. There is a fix posted somewhere that simply requires the fitting of a resistor from memory to fix this issue. I'd have to find it again to check.

soopy, thank you for your answer.

I think I'll have to order the 9X and just give it a go. I should be able to master the programming bit. (as a professional embedded software engineer ;) )

This evening I'm going to visit the club I want to join and get some more info. If the situation stays the same I'll order the 9x and keep gathering info until I get it. After that I'll post my progress (or lack of it) here.
