JR 378 Upgrade to 2.4Ghz

Hi Guys.

This is my first post here and I must say that I have been reading the website and forums with interest. This is a great site!
Lots and lots of stuff that has been confusing me most of my RC time (about 28 years now) and have been afraid to ask has been explained.
So anyway ... I took a break from RC about 15 years ago and returned to it about 3 years ago at which time I got myself a JR 378 (second hand).
I have always only flown gliders and slope soarers as I find them relaxing and amazing graceful compared to power models. Oh I have also owned a heli for a short time, the less said about that the better :D .
Recently I have been flying out of a paddock near my house (Rotorua NZ) because it is accessible and has almost unlimited space to the North and West with houses and lake Rotorua to the south and East. I have however noticed some glitching some of which could have been disastrous for my model during a high speed pass.
Should I convert my JR378 to 2.4Ghz? I found a "how to" on another forum from somebody who installed a Corona transmitter in the back of his 378. But is it a good idea?

Edit: No that I am reading yet more I have also learned that shift to FHSS might be preferable while I am at it. Does anybody have any idea which module I could use with the same principle as the above?

Yep, going 2.4GHz is a pretty good idea these days for a number of reasons.

1. receivers are cheaper.
Although you can pick up some cheap second-hand FM/PCM receivers now that lots of folks are shifting to 2.4GHz, that won't last forever and some people are still dreaming.

2. reduced risk of interference.
So long as you're using a good 2.4GHz system then the chances of experiencing interference is greatly reduced over the old "longwire" radios.

3. more convenient installations in some cases
Not having a 1m-long receiver antenna can make life a lot simpler in these days of parkfliers and smaller models.

And yes, you can convert your radio to 2.4GHz and it'll cost anywhere from $80-$100 here in NZ, depending on the brand of 2.4GHz you opt for.

Since you're only 45 minutes away in Rotorua, I suggest you come over to Tokoroa one weekend and have a look at what we're using here. There are FASST, DSM2, FrSky, Corona and other 2.4GHz systems operating here most weekends and you can chat with the people using them to get their feedback.

You can also have a jolly good fly while you're here :-)

Heh ... I can't reply to PM's .... it said something about posting more before I could do that.

Hopefully this weather sorts itself out sometime soon.
I lived about 2 K's away from the airfield when I was at school in Tokoroa so I know it well.
Might see you there sometime.

Hahahaha ... OK exactly 3 years later I am dragging this one back up.

Can somebody advise me wether the DHT 8 Ch DIY kit or DHTU Kit will work on my JR378? Should I bother considering a 9x is only a few dollars more?
