Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I hope posting links works ok (if not this post will make no sense whatsoever!). Here is an article about a new lithium battery technology that offers a 5x increase in capacity, using silicon/carbon anodes:

http://www.gizmag.com/silicon-based-lit ... ode/14752/

Silicon anodes have been around in research for quite a while, but only at research quality. The thing that caught my eye here is that the technology maturity described sounds much closer to production than other reported results (such as silicon nano-wire anodes).

A 5x capacity increase is huge - it will make as big difference to modeling as Lithiums did when they were first introduced. Too early to speculate on cycle lifetime, but the results do look prominsing.

I hope we'll see these silicon/carbon-based cells on the market in 1-2 years, preferably sooner.

Peter

Exciting find! As if lithium batteries did not store enough energy already. I wonder what one would look like in a thermal runaway! I can only imagine the amazing run times, would really make for some fun long distance FPV piloting from a car! Thank you for sharing!
