Dumb question: FrSky telemetry receivers.

Finally received my FrSky dui kit yesterday, together with the 8 channel D8R-II telemetry capable Rx.

The thing is, as you can see, there are 8 channel connectors on the side, with no battery connector, and three connectors on the side. One of which I thought must be the battery connector. But in two places in the instruction sheet it says, "Warning: Battery or servos are NOT to be plugged into side ports (A1/A2/Rx) otherwise damage may occur."

So, how does one connect a battery to power the Rx???

You need to use one of the 8 channel connectors.

If you are running an electric motor with an ESC w/BEC you just plug it into Channel 3 and you'll have the receiver powered and be able to control the ESC/Motor. If, on the other hand, you are using a glow engine and need all 8 channels (or you are using a separate BEC), I suspect you'll have to patch into one of the servo cords or use one of the Y connector cords to plug both the battery and a servo into the same channel. In respect to glow engines, I am no expert (With X being the sign of the unknown, and a Spurt being a Squirt under pressure) so take my advice with a wee bit of salt. Hopefully Bruce or someone else more knowledgeable on glow powered or separate BEC R/C planes can confirm or correct my assumptions.

The three side ports should be for telemetry sensors.

Regards

Christian

PS: For the record, any of the 8 channel connectors can power the receiver.

Thanks old bean, I assumed it must be something along those lines (pun intended). This Rx was indeed meant for a .40 glow model with a five cell eneloop Rx battery pack.

I will however be using it first in an electric glider I have on order from HK. Apparently the motor and esc on these are pretty crap, so I'll probably have some further questions on how to choose and set up a new motor and esc with a bec.

I chose this model partly because it's cheap and reasonably tough, but also because it has flaps almost ready to go and so I get to fool around with all the glider mixing on er9x firmware with the 9x.

I plan to use this for some FPV flying too, with the camera mounted high behind the wing; not so much for looking around, as for really getting the feeling of flying a glider on slope or thermals.

I have also have a Phoenix 2000. Great model and flies perfectly. I still have the standard ESC and motor and both working fine. However the 2 Servos in the fuselage had stripped gears even before connecting the RX and Battery. I changed them both. The Aileron ones were ok. I have also installed the Flaps servos and it takes a while to pull up unless you have a good head wind.

Its a great model!! you'll love it.

Wow, thanks for that. Mine is coming from the Oz warehouse, so hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. I'm not expecting much from the servos etc (or the clevis pins, so I've read) but it should be easy enough to get going.

I just love gliders. :-)

Its a great performer Sid and make for a perfect platform if you're after really smooth video footage say from a GoPro or something.

Any tips? I've heard the motors (if they last) get real hot, apparently they need some form of cooling vents cut in. Also, how did you hinge the flaps? Tape, or what?

Got one of those and it's a fantasic plane to learn on.

I bought an ARF version of it so I can't really comment on the electronics that come with the PNF version. However what I can tell you that after burning a motor that was already bigger than the one the ARF comes with (judging from pictures) I ended up with a much larger motor (I'll get back to you on the kv and exact size and prop specs soon) and a 60A ESC 2200mAh 3s lipo on a 600-700W power setup. With that it does go vertical and still glides perfectly well.

Anyway few pointers on building it:
1) The wings are really soft out of the box and there's a stupid design choice in them where the center spar ends and then theres a bit of nothing but foam before the outer spar begins. So there is a spot on the wings where its super spongy and flexible. Either way the easiest way we found to fix it was by sticking glass fiber tape (this sort of thing http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/323647 ... c_tape.jpg with endless unidirection fibers) on the bottom of the wing all the way from the centre to the wingtip.
2) The way the stabilizers are mounted is also pretty rubbish and flexible. Put some epoxy between the vertical stabilizer and the fuselage after youve mounted it to give it some support.
3) The EPO hinges are almost universally too thin and look dangerously close to falling off after a few servo movements. Putting some additional tape into the hinge should make it sturdy enough to never give you any problems
4) The clevises arent great, not terrible but not great either. You could either replace them or suport them with a bit of shrink tube. Also for safety you might want to put some epoxy on the controll surface horns after you've mounted them
5) Mount the flap servos in such a way that the flaps are already quite far down (30ish degrees) at servo centre (a servo tester makes life a lot easier in these situations) and that theres plenty of room for the servo horn to to pull the flap down.
You'll want enough throw in your flaps to make flaps full down look something like these:

Thanks for the info Shotglass and the time and trouble you went through to post that, it's very much appreciated.

I look forward to getting more info on your exact power set up, and I'll post up shots of mine when it's all set up to go.

Just as an aside: Crumbs, I'm still spending left and right getting back into rc!..it's all the little things that add up..battery charger, leads, yada yada yada. I blew more on bits at a real store the other day than I have on planes (I wanted stuff NOW and not in three weeks, lol). Mind you prices at hobby shops can give you a coronary. On shop wanted $32 for a crappy modelling saw that I got at a hardware place up the road for like $2:00.

Grrrr!!!

Also: If you buy heaps from HobbyKing you get trapped in the house waiting for your toys, er, I mean equipment, to arrive (and then they label it "Toy Parts" on the box, which makes my wife fall about laughing).

ok so currently ive got this motor:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... oduct=7073
this one would be equivalent and available... and cheaper
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=14342

with a sentry 60 esc (any 50-60 amp esc with brake and a beefy bec should do)
and 3s 2200 40c lipos

and i think it was a 10x6 folding prop

the motor does get rather hot but thus far its holding up fine
