PC power supply

Having looked at Bruces video, and several others I have got myself a Compaq PDP-123P PC power supply. This does not have an on/off switch, since the wall socket it plugs into does have a switch this did not seem like it could be a problem.
I've separated the wires by colour, bundled all black (GND) wires together, and all yellow (+12V) together, and hooked the green (PS-ON) to a black (GND). When I turn on the power at the wall the fan does not start so I am lead to believe there is nobody home at this point!
There is a grey wire, a post on another forum suggested this is "power ok", and the poster said it needs to be connected to ground OR 5V red wire (he wasn't sure which!), so I'm wondering about this.
Also some videos show a white cube resistor (20W, some apparently use several of these) being connected to 5V red and Black ground wires to provide a load on the 5V circuit.
No smoke has been released at this point so it can't be too major a problem!

you need to attach the power on lead to ground, witch is pin 14 on a 20pin plug on the power supply the wire should be either green or grey, have a look here if you having troubles

Thanks Ashley, you seem to provide answers to most of my questions! Much appreciated, will give it a go and see how I get on.

Back on this little project after the xmas madness.
Put a multimeter on the yellow and black wires and it has a voltage of 0.582V rather than the 12 I expected! Am I correct to conclude the power supply is stuffed, which would explain the cheap (free) price I paid for it?

No fan running on power up is the best indicator, chuck that one and find another.
Find a 2nd hand PC shop and offer $10-15 for one they can prove works. Save you a lot of grief.

The fan is indeed dead as a dead thing so will grab another one!
Thanks!

Got another power supply from the local computer shop, this one goes like a good one so did all that the video showed and all's well.
From talking to the guy at the computer shop I was apparently doing him a favour taking a couple of them away, they are no use to him and the fees to dump them are pretty big. More than happy to help!
