Measuring speed

If you've been building electronic bits or modifying stuff you've bought then tell us all about it here. A good place to discuss the installation of 2.4GHz DIY modules too.

Hi Bruce,

the Dynamic Soaring guys have used the Falcon DS radar gun to verify the DS world record at 399 MPH.
It's available at www.skipmillermodels.com
It is quite pricey, but allows speeds up to 575 MPH /920 km/h

Problem solved!

However, users of most other RC systems (such as Futaba) have no such option at present, short of installing a 3rd-party stand-alone telemetry setup.

That too would depend on the accuracy you would be looking for.
My lovely wife gave me an android phone and there is a perfect GPS recording application call MyTracks, I've already mapped a few things and it records speed well.
Provided I could fly well enough to trust my phone would return undamaged. ;)

Paint or tape some barcodes under the wing, then a quick pass over the checkouts at your local market should give you not only the times, but a couple of petrol discount vouchers as a bonus. ;-)
