auto-tracking hi-gain antenna

On my to-do list, I've added an auto-tracking hi-gain receiver antenna for use with 5.8GHz video systems.

The idea here is that because you have telemetry feeding back the exact location of the model, it becomes a trivial task to create an auto-tracking system that will ensure a hi-gain (highly directional) video receiver antenna is always directly pointed at the model. This will, in most cases, completely mitigate the effects of the higher path-loss (ie: normally shorter range) of the 5.8GHz video equipment and even allow lower-powered video transmitters to be used so as to reduce the risk of desensitizing a 2.4GHz RC receiver and extend battery life.

Anyone interested?

Good, I found a source of low-cost 360 degree servos today that will work very nicely for the horizontal aspect of the tracking.

I'll start a project page for this soon.

Yeah, I'm interested too. As soon as you start moving ahead on the project and create Webpage on your site post a link to it in this thread.

Tracking antennas are a great idea - I believe it is always better to optimise the suck end of the link instead of trying to blow ever harder at the tx. Directional antennas cut down the interference too.

Did this ever come to fruition? Sounds very interesting.

I'm going to bump this and put in a suggestion, a dual antenna diversity system. Perhaps a patch antenna and a tracked grid antenna?
Would be very interesting for those interested in loooooooong range flying :).

And Rx diversity set up: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost ... tcount=170
