Glue, glue, glue

Here's an area where you can ask any kind of question about RC models and find a whole lot of useful information to help you get started.

PS. Is it gluing or glueing? My spell checker is happy with both.

Further to the velcro to foam question I found this thread - which gives some more suggestions http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=794573

and this one http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-53452.html which gives a lot of very useful info on glues in general for RC.

The second thread mentions gorilla glue - which turns out is a polyuethane glue.

As a result I've successfully tried Selley's Urethane Bond over the weekend http://www.selleys.com.au/adhesives/household-adhesive/task-specific/urethane-bond . I left it for 48 hours before putting any stress on it. It has worked extremely well. It is a one part glue and wipes/washes off your fingers easily - unlike epoxy. I lightly sanded the foan and cleaned it with metho before applying the glue.

As a result I've also used it to stick the fin of my Sky Surfer to the tail plane. This has worked better than CA with kicker - which sticks - but is extremely brittle and breaks too easily. The polyurethane stays a little flexible and resists shocks.

I'll give up using CA and kicker as a result.

For gluing the velcro to batteries, receivers and ESC's - the self adhesive velcro sticks fine after cleaning the surface first with metho.

The thread http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13160 discusses the problems with CA and talks about UHU POR which is especially designed for foam. It does not appear to be that easy to come by though.

I'd be interested to hear about anyone who's used it and what they think.

Cheers,

Geoff

I bought some "epoxy steel" from a chinese junk shop.I have found to my cost that it melts foam!
It must be based on a chemical that attacks the foam. You can tell as soon as it comes out of the tube ,'cause one part will be a greenish blue, and the other part pink.It has a "thinners" type smell to it,nothing like the usual epoxy odour. It does work perfectly well on wood.
Is there a world shortage of clear epoxy?None of the junk shops seem to have any in stock.I'm not going to pay $15 for two tubes at hardware places.

Por is also sold as UHU Creativ, it is much like Shoo Goo

edit: and if I haven't mentioned it yet 3M VHB tape if you can get it (normally used to stick plastic trim on cars)

I haven't purchased a low-temp gun yet. I have two of the hi-temp ones....so I have one of them loaded with hi-temp glue sticks and the other one loaded with low-temp ones. When I glue foam....I run the low-temp one on about 40% on my variac. seems to work just fine....saved me from purchasing another gun. $$$
