Fake carbon fiber blades

Postby tommy » Tue Aug 03, 2010 12:32 pm

Hi I just received some supposedly carbon fibre tail blades for my heli and I suspect the blades to be glass fibre look alkies.

First of all I ordered 62mm blades and only got 60mm blades.
The edges of the blades also look very roughly cut.

My question is there any way to tell if the blades are carbon or glass fibre ???
I haven’t had carbon fibre blades before but I do have a carbon fibre frame to compare with.
Thank you.

The conductivity test would be the easiest way.

You need to scratch through the epoxy until you can put the probe of a multi-meter directly onto one of the fibers -- do this in two places. There should be some readily measurable conductivity between the two points -- typically no more than a few K-ohms (depending on how far apart you take your measurements. Of course this will leave some little divots in your blades but a dot of CA and a quick sand/polish would repair that.
