Better FPV camera.

Postby Sid Sideslip » Sat Jan 21, 2012 12:29 am

Although I'll stick with the el-cheapo HobbyKing camera for the first few flights, in case I damage it learning, the image really isn't that great. I've been looking around on the FPV-LAB forum for a better camera that won't break the bank and came across this model:

600TVL SONY SUPER HAD CCD D-WDR Color Board Camera with OSD Menu DNR

Which for $50 seems damn good value, and others report that it works well. It has a 1/3'' SONY SUPER HAD II CCD and 600 TV lines, with an effective pixel size of PAL:753(H)*582(V). The specs seem to be the same as the Foxtech WDR 750 600tvl wide dynamic range mini cam which sells for $130 (in a case).

Here's a short video showing two different white balance settings. The quality looks pretty good to me.

@ Bruce, if you haven't considered this one for a review, it could be worth checking out. It seems this camera is available from a number of suppliers, some with a case being dearer.

Thanks Sid. I had been looking at this 540 line camera but your one looks better for the same money.

Glad to be helpful. :-)

Btw, the two threads where this camera is mentioned at FPV-LABS are here:

SC2000 600TVL Sony OSD camera settings.

Need a new FPV camera - TBS 69 or foxtech WDR750 600tvl or ??????

Note: The Sony 600TVL seems to have the same innards as the Foxtech WDR750 mentioned in the first post, but at a much lower price.

I'm not sure just how well the Sony compares to Team Black Sheep's recommended TBS 69, but have a look at their demo video on the product page if you haven't seen it before, it's expensive, but looks really good.

I've got a bunch of different cameras coming -- the first arrived today.

I'll be lining them up and doing some serious comparisons in the coming weeks.

Look ing forward to it. :-)

Could you be more specific about what you have ordered? In particular, do any use the same 1/3'' SONY SUPER HAD II CCD as the camera I linked to?

I just ordered the one from TBS. I have nothing to compare it to but I'll report my findings none the less. as soon as it arrives.
