BEC vs UBEC for an ESC (40-50A)

Postby RCFlyingKiwi » Sun Apr 01, 2012 8:16 am

Is it worth the additional weight, bulk, and cost of a switched (UBEC) over the traditional linear BEC ?

How does this relate to the general RF noise in the battery bay and why do UBECs generally have toroids and BECs dont ? I suspect there is some serious noise generated by switching UBECs, could this be controlled by using a metal fabric shield round the ESC and earthing it back to the LiPo.

UBECs are claimed to excel in efficiency and generate much less heat. I need some good oil on this subject.

Thanks

Right now I'm working on a video/web-page to explain the intricacies of BECs and SBECs/UBECs.

My desk is littered with the damned things and, although they're mostly built from the same components, there are some significant differences in the performances.

Rather than go into all the details here -- I'd say just keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming vid in a few days.
