AIRCRAFT LIGHTING?

Postby Jvangent » Fri Apr 06, 2012 6:49 am

Ive been looking at aircraft lighting for night time flying. there are a few on hobbyking (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8850__Turnigy_R_C_LED_Lighting_System.html http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6811__Lumifly_Lighting_system_FAA_Configurable.html) was wondering if you could review them? or maybe you might have a cheaper DIY version? anyways Love your videos and reviews! :D Cant wait to see more! and if you choose maybe even something about Night time flying with lights :P

these:

and the other colours work brilliantly and are probably the cheapest hk offers in terms of price/brightness
all colours except for yellow are very very bright and easy to see
keep in mind though that red and especially blue get blurry at distance making it harder to see the plane properly

I was thinking about something like that! would work great on each wing tip one Red one Green. but i was thinking something more scale, like the FAA Navigation lighting? :)

for this to work nicely youll want to throw as many leds as the airframe can carry at the plane instead of trying to go scale and ending up a with a plane that you cant see more than 1 light of (and thus cant see the orientation) 99% of the time

I just bought a bag of 20 LED's off Trademe . Picked the spec I wanted . Very Good price but...
1/3 of them are comparatively dimm & unusable, obviously they dont meet the claimed specs .

Sorry to hear about that mate, one of the risks of buying online i guess. but just a few questions if i may?
1. how will you connect them? will they be controlled by one of your channels so you can turn them off/on as you please?
2. will you be doing something like a strobe effect? like FAA Nav beacons?
3. how much did the 20 LED's cost you? ive been lookin on ebay and they ive seen 20 5mm LEDs for around 8$ including postage to Australia. dont know if they would be any good or not. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20-x-Red-LED-Lamp-Light-Set-25cm-Pre-Wired-5mm-12V-DC-/300553603717?pt=AU_B_I_Electrical_Test_Equipment&hash=item45fa640a85
