Some AXN questions

Postby wesselspeed » Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:04 pm

Hi all,

I want to buy the fabulous AXN jet but i have some questions.

I am going to buy the 9x but do i realy need the freesky mod to use a 4 channel reciever or would the 8 channel reciever also fit in the axn, or do i need the freesky mod for any other reason?

I also need an esc but im in doubt if i should get the 25-30A ss or the blue 30A because i need a good lvc and someone said to me the lvc in the 25-30A ss was not good.
And i saw that you can program the blue 30A esc to slow the motor down so you know your battery is almost empty.
So wich esc should i get and how do you guys know when your plane is empty, does it fall out of the sky or so?
And is the ss esc bad or does it have a good lvc?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,

Wessel

Hi Wessel, welcome to the forum. You can use the standard rx in the axn without a problem. If you think it's too big, apparently the HK 6-channel rx is compatible with the 9x,and a bit smaller.
The Frsky is reputed to give better range, but my mate uses the standard 9x system without problems.
I used the 25-30 esc, because I had one,but the blue 30 is as good or better. No problems so far.
With most esc's,the motor slows down,or stops, leaving you just enough power to bring the plane down safely. On most esc's you can program the voltage point at which this occurs.

Welcome Wessel,

You will find the Rx that comes with your 9x a bit cumbersome in the AXN, Frsky do have smaller Rx's but to overcome the room issue this is how I dealt with it:

viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1443&start=150

I carved out a niche for the Rx to fit into and still allow the cockpit cover to fit, when you do the cutout don't be alarmed :o when you have reached the wing, its tough enough (assuming that you have glued the wing in 8-) )

Have a fish through this forum topic there is lots of useful info :D

Cheers Dennis

I also use a standard 9x , i do use the Hobby King 2.4Ghz Receiver 6Ch Version 2 in mine without any problems much smaller and about the same price and If you see in Bruce's build video he shows where to put it without any problems and i get about 1km distance out of it too the axn is a small spec when that happens........ the Frsky module gets about 2.5km or more
HobbyKing 30A BlueSeries Brushless Speed Controller is what i have for mine also, seams to operate flawlessly with the 6x4 prop combo that people use to get more vertical climb out of the stock motor

no the plane dosen't fall out of the sky, the motor slows down and you know you just glide it into to land just remember to build it light keep it close ( something i had to learn hehehe ) and have fun

thanks

Wessel,

One other consideration for you.... the stock T9x Tx/Rx combo is not an approved RC system in Australia. The FrSky system is approved.

Not sure if thats going to make any difference to where or how you intend to fly, but its worth being aware of at least. If you fly with a club that is MAAA affiliated, then they might have an issue with you using the stock system.

Re your voltage question ... i fly with the stock ESC (25A rated/2A Bec) and stock motor. I draw about 16amps WOT with the stock 5x5 prop. I regularly get >20 mins of flying out of a 2200mah pack and even then the pack with be at around 3.75volts per cell and i'll have used ~1500-1600mah. I never get anywhere near the lvc (which is can be programmed into 2 different modes anyway - 1: motor power reduction mode, 2: lower voltage full cut out mode). I fly in the first mode but its never been activated yet.

I also use the FrSky telemetry on my batteries with a settable alarm. I have the alarm set rather conservatively at 11 volts.

Don't believe you can do that with the stock Rx :-)

I'd certainly recommend going with the FrSky setup myself.

Hi,

first, thanks for the reply's

Ok i will just buy the turnigy 9x and i will buy the hobbyking 6ch reciever as well.
but wich recievers are actually useable with the standard 9x?

And when i check out the page of the 25-30 super simple esc it sais lvc cut-off at 3v, but it doesnt say what it does by then so does it stop or just slow down, and how about the blue 30A esc that Bruce is using in his build video?

If i cant find the answer to this question i will just buy the esc that Malcurin has because that esc will slow down as said on the hobbyking site.

And maybey i will buy the freesky upgrade later on, but will the standard reciever and the hobbyking recievers still work with the freesky module?

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Wessel

No
Only Frsky receivers work with the Frsky module.

Only flysky compatible Rx's such as the hobbyking work with Flysky Turnigy and Eurgle
versions of the 9x

ok thanks thats one question answered.
So i'll stick with the hobbyking and standard recievers but that okay for now.
But how about the esc stuff anyone?

If it says 3v cutoff, Im thinking that its a straight cutoff as 3v per cell is the bare minimum you want to take a lipo from what i have read about them, the also get the programming card with the speed controller well worth it making the setup simple a few dollars extra but if using them for the first time it makes them easy as

thanks

Hello,

I have just found that this esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _UBEC.html
can be set to low mid and high cutoff 2.8v, 3v and 3.2v per cell and it can be set to reduce power or complete stop when low voltage is reached.

Should i get this esc because i can setup all the things i want so my batteries will allways be safe and if i notice the plane is getting slower i just land. 3.2v per cell is nice isnt it?

So should i buy this one or is this esc not good?
