CP Antennas- What type of wire?

Postby fpsazerbaijan » Sat Aug 25, 2012 1:16 pm

Hi all, Having seen Bruce's cloverleaf build video I've decided it's worth a shot.

The question I have before I start is whether to buy copper coated MIG wire (e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Copper-Coated ... 950wt_1163) OR solid copper wire (e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 717wt_1163)

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my first shot at circularly polarized antennas :)

Cheers,

I pulled some out of a coaxial cable I had laying around...

It feels a bit flimsy until you solder the centers together, then it's rock solid...
If anyone is feeling a bit paranoid....BEHIND YOU....

Thanks Keith, was that solid copper or copper coated? Would it even make a difference?

The diameter makes a little difference, for 5.8G you should use 5mm diameter wire. 8mm will do if you're not fussy. Anything conductive seems to work fine. I use silver coated copper to resist corrosion. Your signal will get weaker as your antennas develop surface corrosion over time.
