New MI servos from HobbyKing

Postby RCModelReviews » Fri Dec 24, 2010 2:18 am

As you can see in this video, I have just received one of the new MI servos purchased from HobbyKing.

These have a new magnetic encoder instead of a feedback pot and they also have titanium gears, a coreless motor and plenty of torque.

First impressions are good -- but as we all know, first impressions can also be misleading - so I'll be doing a barrage of tests and then a whole lot of flying of this servo in a large 3D gas plane to see how it holds up.

A full review will be on the website early in 2011.

I chose the bigger MI servos because:

a) they were in stock
b) I have models of a suitable size to test them in

but if the servo I have turns out okay, I'll get some of the smaller ones and test them too.

I haven't had a chance to test the servo "in action" yet but on the bench it seems to be fast, accurate and powerful.

Not so sure about the gears though -- which is why I want to put it into service for a while before I publish the review. They're already quite a bit "smoother" than they were when the servo was new so I don't think there's much titanium in them. By comparison, the Hitec TG5955 servos I have in my 50cc gaser are a couple of years old and they're still tight as a duck's bottom and still have the grittiness they had when new. Obviously they haven't worn one bit -- despite the vibes and heavy loadings I've given them.

I guess this servo self destructed and vapourised like the full review that was supposed to come out in 2010?

Not too sure what is going .... now is nearly 2012 and still no review on the MI servos.....

Gutted!
