Help with choosing parts

Here's an area where you can ask any kind of question about RC models and find a whole lot of useful information to help you get started.

Help with choosing parts

Postby Dgpilot » Fri Jan 18, 2013 5:37 am

O so after I wrote this I realised it was a big ask of someone to check all this, and it IS but I need help, I will be very greatful to anyone who responds :) this will be kind of the determining factor in weather I get into the hobby or not and I really want to I just want to start out right and not waste money on junk...

Hi guys, I'm 15 and want to get into RC aircraft, I've had a few "toy grade" Helis but the inevitable happened :/
Planes seem like a more affordable less crash prone solution, plus I really like FPV, I'm brilliant at electronics and I work at a local jaycar stockist, so I'm going to build the FPV backpack, this should be pretty easy as I have have designed fairly complex systems for people in the past and made them successfully :)
I have put together a bit of a shopping list in a sense of my first plane, I'm a good heli pilot and I have a great place to fly at a farm here in Victoria long grass and lots of open air make for light crashes I hope ;)
How does this sound for a good plane to later put the backpack on :) I'm doing systems engineering at school this year and I will be using this as a platform for more complex stuff:
Airframe = tek sumo from hobbyking
Motor = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... 0w%5F.html.
(I presume this motor comes with all necessary "stuff" to attach the prop?)

Esc = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... FUBEC.html

Radio gear = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... re%5F.html

Battery charger (I don't have a good one yet) = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... ories.html

Servos ( two of these ) = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... Servo.html

Lipo = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... FPack.html

Prop = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... pc%5F.html

Hardware = http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... et%5F.html

It looks as though you have made a pretty good selection the motor comes with the prop adapter and fixings see the inset picture.
Good luck with the light crashes!

Good choices, nothing overly expensive, would also recommend this

Will help look after your battery, it can also give an indication that the battery is having issues (eg won't balance) and could "burn your house down"

"burn your house down"

I knew someone was responsible for all those bush fires!

I'm glad I live in the wet tropics, at least I can run away from a cyclone. Those poor bastards that live in bush fire areas don't have that luxury.
I have experienced one bush fire and one cat 5 Cyclone (Yasi), give me the cyclone any day seeing a wall of flame move at greater than 100kph is a very sobering thing.

My apologies for making light of a serious subject hope this doesn't cause an international incident.
Yes bush fires are pretty frightening but people should bear in mind that the whole bush ecosystem actually has evolved to periodically burn and revive.
I saw a grand designs Australia on our TV the other day about a guy who was building a fireproof house (to replace the one that burned down). The material seemed to work well you could put your hand on one side and a blow-lamp on the other and not feel the heat.
If you're going to live in the bush you should have at least a fireproof shelter possibly made out of the stuff he was using, it really should be common sense and probably compulsory!

No offence taken Bill.
A new insight into bush fires has revealed that we now have too many trees, this causes an increase in under brush, the main fuel of a bush fire. Apparently the indigenous farmers used fire to farm this country and did not have this problem.
Apparently we are "over saving the planet".
John O'Brien (PJ Hartigan) wrote a poem called "Said Hanrahan", pretty much somes up this country and us.................we are never happy!!

Sorry Dgpilot, stole your thread.

No just Anglo Saxon ancestry overall not just an Australian thing!
Somewhat reminiscent of Feste's Song from twelfth night.
The rain it raineth every day!
Now It's snow we're grousing about like we've never seen it before!
