ASP 61 Four Stroke - Run in Procedure - Shakes

As i;ve discussed here and elsewhere i have converted the EP-Pitts (Yellow and Black) to run with a ASP 61 Four stroke. The body has been fiberglassed and reinforecd etc. All the electricsare installed and the motor has been mounted and its was time to start the thing.

I added about 100ml of fuel to the tank and set about cranking the thing over. Engine started and splatter quite a bit. The plane shook about and i gave it a little bit of throttle so that it would idle. There was quite a bit of oil and smoke so as per the instructions i nipped it back 1/4 turn. The engine still seems to splutter a bit and there is no way it would run at a very low idle without shaking itself and the plane to bits. after the run the engine head was pretty cool. A cup of coffee would have been hotter with the exception of the muffer which was hot to the touch.

So i guess i have the following questons.

1) How many runs of fuel or how many minutes of running until "run-in"
2) how much smoke and oil is normal
3) how hot sould the head be during normal operation. ( i have a laser temp thingie)
4) should it shake about or shoudl it be smooth
5) if it shouldnt shake what are the causes
6) how do you know if its too lean.
7) Anything i have missed id appreciate your advice.

Also What props do you recomend for this gasser engine

They are very solid and take take lots of abuse. Obvioulsy once they are chipped i replace them but on my electric but they are as tuff as nails.

Even if they do clip the ground they rarely damage the prop.

Yep, I've been using those props and they're good value.

Another option is the Master Airscrew K-series. I like the MS-K props for 4-strokes and they're even tougher than those HK ones.

Master Airscrews are made (from memory) by the Windsor Propeller company.

I think even HK stocks Master Airscrews -- just checked yes, they do

did a fair bit of muckimg around the afternoon and its sounding alot better with smooth transitions and much less oil and smoke.

thrust is amazing!

still needs a bit of work on the idle but very close. What is the idea rpm for idle.

With a *new* engine that's only got minutes rather than hours of running on it you'll be doing quite well to get an idle in the 2800-3000 RPMs range.

Once it's a bit more run-in then you can probably expect about 2300-2400 RPMs. With a larger/heavier prop you could get that down to 2000-2300 RPMs or even lower -- but the main thing is to keep the RPMs at a level that provide *reliable* operation.

I think Master Airscrew makes a 12X6 K series. The K series are wider bladed and grab more air since the four strokes have more torque at lower rpm for the prop to take advantage of.

Just as a follow up to this.

After running in a few tanks and tuning pretty closly to what I thought was correct I sent it I to the air on the weekend. By the time it landed it started to idel really well and not shake about.

My Magnum/ASP 52 four stroke took about a gallon before it really broke in and started running good. It gets a lot of use now.
My first one was a total piece of #$%@ and got returned.
