Hobby King FPV Gear and thoughts on this one?

Postby bmsweb » Sat Jul 30, 2011 12:14 am

I've been looking at this one from HK http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=15295
and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this. I plan on using it in conjunction with a Turnigy 9X radio

That appears to be the FoxTech 200mW 5.8GHz video system that I have been using with great success (over 2Kms of range when set up properly).

Being 5.8GHz it should work fine with the 9X radio.

Ha! I've just been posting about FPV on another (non rc) forum and that was the gear I showed them. I too have been hopeful that this set up will work well, you certainly can't argue with the price.

I also linked them to this nice FPV footage from some guy in Vienna.

Note, although it's a cool video, I have issues with people flying FPV choppers in a crowded city like that (and also around a heritage cathedral). It will only take some kid being blinded or killed for the press to go bananas and demand that FPV gear be outlawed. Not good for the hobby.
What goes up...better bloody stay up (until I say otherwise).

Thanks Sid and Bruce,

I just watched your video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxaw6db0vvM and it's really interesting how the signal was way better the further you moved away from the receiver. Is it possible to improve image quality up close with a different antenna setup?

Yes, using another receiver with a diversity switch will eliminate those close-up loss of signal events.

I've got another receiver and am building a simple diversity switch so will post video of that in action in a week or two's time (depending on weather).

That's great to hear Bruce, I think for a lot of newbies the amount of choice is overwhelming. I found your video interesting because it not something you would expect. The further you go the worse the reception is supposed to be . . well that's what I would have expected.

That system is entirely illegal in the UK, Europe and the USA. The frequencies that it uses are outside of the ISM band and even the Amateur band.

You need an Airwave compatible system - such as ImmersionRC's transmitters here: http://www.firstpersonview.co.uk/transm ... ransmitter

The system you mentioned uses these (illegal) 5.8GHz Frequencies:

CH1: 5705 MHz
CH2: 5685 MHz
CH3: 5665 MHz
CH4: 5645 MHz
CH5: 5885 MHz
CH6: 5905 MHz
CH7: 5925 MHz
CH8: 5945 MHz

Airwave/ ImmersionRC/ Fathshark/ Iftron frequencies:

Legal

CH1: 5740 MHz

CH2: 5760 MHz

CH3: 5780 MHz

CH4: 5800 MHz

CH5: 5820 MHz

CH6: 5840 MHz

CH7: 5860 MHz

Unfortunately not a single channel matches! I have no idea why they chose to use a totally different channel set to everyone else in the industry!

All the best

Great info Simon, but how do I find out if these frequencies are legal in Australia? I will do some googling now

The sad reality is that most of the FPV gear on the market is illegal in most markets.

Even the stuff that is legal frequently relies on the user having the appropriate amateur radio licenses.

The big bonus of 5.8GHz (legal and otherwise) is this part of the spectrum is normally used for very short-range and "point to point" communications which means that FPV systems are unlikely to interfere with anything and there's not much out there which will interfere with the FPV signal.

The Fatshark/Immersion receiver doesn't seem nearly as sensitive as the Foxtech one and I would not expect the same kind of range from that system as I have achieved on the latter.

5.8GHz is still the band least likely to cause interference with other services and other aspects of a model's onboard electronics.
