How to record your FPV flight?

Postby Oops » Wed Aug 31, 2011 12:55 am

What do you guys use to record your FPV flight from the receiver?

I connected my wife's Sony cam recorder (dcr-dvd653e) to the second out port on the 5.8Ghz receiver but get only a blue screen. Tried the video (and to be certain) the s-video input on the camera but no difference there.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Thanks Opix, I looked it up and they are not too bad in price. My laptop is a bit old and the batteries die after 30 minutes. I had hoped to be able to get something simple to record the same picture I see through the FatShark glasses which I can later put on the HDD or stick.

I use my camcorder.

Most camcorders are a bit fussy about the quality of the video they'll record -- if the frequencies (frame/scan) are a little bit off, they'll blue-screen.

Make sure you're not using a 30fps camera with a 25fps video or v/v.

What camera do you use, Bruce?

I have no idea how to change frame rates on our camera. When plugging it does gives the typical initial crackle for the audio.

A camera's framerate is usually determined by the standard it supports (ie: PAL, NTSC, SECAM etc) and the country in which it is designed to operate.

In the case of PAL it's 25FPS, NTSC is (almost) 30FPS.

You can't usually record a PAL signal on an NTSC camera and vice-versa and I'm not aware of any consumer-level cameras that allow you to switch between PAL and NTSC.

Bruce, what video works with your system?

I use a BEV 5.8G 500mW (pulg and play system specially designed for FPV) and BEV-KX171 pro-PAL which I believe is PAL and the Sony is bought in NZ so is likley to be also PAL. But no luck. I went to the local second hand store for an old video camcorder but non had an external A/V input. I am now trying an AV recorder from Jaycar (QM-3824) which is also PAL input but has a resolution of only 480x234. I'll report back.

My camcorder is a Panasonic MX500 (old-as) but it has a VCR mode where you can record from and play back to any composite PAL video source.

Looked on TradeMe but non showing. Old is not the issue here (look at us), the newer camcorders have only an output.
