how about ailerons reversed?

and I've found that aircraft without a rudder respond poorly to a broken aileron servo arm, but I did get the mud out of the engine

It looks as if the tips have been damaged. Was the model like that when you bought it?

Did you balance at the CG and side to side? Are both halves of the elevator traveling evenly and smoothly?

The hinges on my AXN have all "let go" and are now held on with unidirectional glassfiber tape.

Works like a charm!

However, it seems as if the bixler is center-hinged which might make that more difficult. With the AXN, it's the top surface that does the hinging so repairing with tape is a breeze.

not really
all you need to do is cut a v shape into the hinge and add some tape

Get some hinges and do it properly like I did in an earlier post... I don't mind short cuts but I like to stick to the basics of model making that I learned many years ago....
